Chapter Nine

Sloane eased her rental into an open parking space, locked it, and headed inside the diner where Brian was sipping coffee in the furthest booth in the back. “Hey, Brian.” Sloane slid onto the pleather seat across from him, rubbing her tired eyes. The cleanse had taken all night, and all she wanted to do was find a bed to fall into, but Brian had called, asking to see her. Of course, she’d driven right over.

The waitress topped off his coffee and placed a steaming plate of steak and eggs in front of him. “You want anything, Doll?”

“Just coffee,” she answered, flipping over the waiting coffee mug so the woman could pour. “We did it,” she leaned forward to whisper her news after the waitress left.

Brian lowered his voice. “Are you sure?” Plates and cups made tinkling sounds in the background. A normal day for normal people. A life Sloane sometimes envied. But not today. Today she had a piece of good news for once.

“I had to cleanse your house. The entity was malevolent. It was a danger to every person in the house. We had to force it out.”

“So it’s gone?” Brian’s voice broke. “But what about Rin? How will we ever find my wife if you kicked out the ghost?”

The whole restaurant turned to stare at them, and Sloane felt her cheeks heat up. “We’re still working on that but at least you can go home.”

“Happy? Happy to live in a haunted house that swallowed my wife?” He pushed his food away.

“I’m still going to find her, Brian,” Sloane coaxed. “But the house wasn’t safe for investigation at this point. Someone was going to die. You saw what happened to that woman. I did what I had to do.”

“I don’t believe that. What if you made things worse? What if we never get her back?” He stood up and punched numbers into his cell. “I’m calling Jonah and you’re not getting paid a cent until you FIND MY WIFE!” He shouted, before leaving the restaurant.

The waitress came over to clear his plate. “How about some breakfast to go with that coffee now, Doll?” she asked as kindly as she could. “No worries, I’ve heard it said that Monroe guy killed his wife and is trying to get away with it. I was almost worried you’d be his next victim. Rumor is that’s his third wife, you know?” She said loud enough for the other patrons to hear. “I never heard what happened to the other two. Left him, some said. But now we are all not so sure.”

Sloane had to connect her brain to her jaw to close her open mouth. Damn small town gossip. She knew Brian and there had never been a previous wife. No matter what though, Brian was screwed if Rin didn’t show up in one piece.

Soon.

“I’m going to toss this and write it off as unpaid,” the waitress said. “Are you sure you aren’t hungry? Go ahead and eat it.”

No use in looking a gift horse in the mouth.
